Anyone who has shopped at Radio Shack over the past few years may not be surprised to learn that the venerable electronics chain is preparing to close 1,100 of its stores across the United States. Unfortunately, though, the company’s recent announcement only adds to a long line of bad news as far as Radio Shack is concerned. Why did this chain fall so hard, and what can we learn from it? Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2015, announcing that it would close more than 1,000 stores and lay off about 17,000 employees by the end of March. This announcement followed several years of losses and declining sales for the company, which had been in business since 1921 and once boasted over 7,000 stores in the United States and Canada. Not every retail company can stay on top of its game, and some even have to close its doors completely. Radio Shack was one of the most popular electronics stores in the country. Still, it’s now facing serious competition from online retailers like Amazon, as well as other electronics stores like Best Buy and Apple stores.
