Dick's is an American sporting goods retail company based in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania and founded by Richard Dick Stack on September 25, 1948. Dick's Sporting Goods started with one store in Binghamton, New York and now operates more than 600 stores throughout the United States. The first Dick's Sporting Goods store opened in 1954 in Binghamton, New York. The company went public on December 22, 1972, listing on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol DKS. In 1999, all stores were renamed Dick's Sporting Goods. The company also owns and operates Golf Galaxy, with 185 locations in the U.S.
By 1974, Dick's was reorganized into a new corporation bearing the name of its founder and eventually moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1999, the company opened its first superstore in Pittsburgh's South Hills Village shopping mall and expanded rapidly thereafter. The chain has since grown to be one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the United States by sales.
