Skype have quickly become one of the world's leading communications apps, enabling users to make voice and video calls, send instant messages, and share files over the internet. First developed in Estonia by Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallinn under their Skyper brand before officially being released for public use later in 2003 as Skyper - Skype then officially becoming Skype when released for public use later that same year.
Skype quickly rose in popularity thanks to its ease of use and free communications services, making it one of the world's most beloved applications. eBay initially purchased Skype in 2005 for $2.6 billion; however, due to their inability to effectively integrate Skype, later that same year they sold off for just under $100 million to an investment group led by Silver Lake.
Microsoft purchased Skype for an impressive $8.5 billion and integrated it into their portfolio of products such as Windows, Office and Xbox. Since then, Skype has continued to develop by adding features such as screen sharing, translation and support for mobile devices.
Skype has revolutionized how people communicate, making it possible to stay in touch with loved ones from any location in the world while conducting meetings and working on projects together from any project site around the globe. Skype's success has also inspired other communication apps like WhatsApp, Zoom and FaceTime - now boasting over 300 Million Monthly Active Users globally!
