Shazam is a music recognition app that allows users to identify songs by holding up their phones close to a speaker or humming the tune. First introduced by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee in 1999 under the initial number 2580 as users needed to dial-in in order to access it, it has since gone through many upgrades over time. Currently, it features more than 200 million registered users worldwide.

Barton, a graduate student at UC Berkeley, had the inspiration for this app while trying to identify a song he heard at a restaurant. Realizing that technology existed but wasn't readily accessible by general consumers, he decided to team up with Inghelbrecht, Wang and Mukherjee to form a business out of their idea.

Shazam originally offered pay-per-use services where users had to pay a fee every time they used the app to identify songs; however, in 2008, the company released a free version supported by advertising which proved immensely popular and expanded Shazam's user base significantly.

Apple acquired Shazam for an estimated $400 million to strengthen its music offerings and integrate music more deeply into products and services. Shazam remains popular globally, with millions of active users on both iOS and Android platforms, now offering services beyond music identification to include discovery, lyrics and music videos.
