Picasa was initially developed by Lifescape in 2002 for digital photo management before it was purchased and integrated by Google as one of their online services in 2004. Users could then easily manage, organize, edit, and organize digital photos using an intuitive user interface.

Picasa quickly gained popularity due to its ease of use and free download/use. Users could perform basic editing tasks such as cropping, resizing and adjusting color/contrast while it also offered advanced features like red-eye removal, temperature adjustment and batch editing.

Picasa was an effective photo management solution capable of automatically organizing photos on users' computers based on date, location and other metadata. Users could further organize their photographs by creating albums or tags manually.

Picasa experienced various modifications over time. However, in 2016, Google announced its intention to retire Picasa for the cloud-based Google Photos service instead. Picasa desktop application was officially discontinued in March 2018, with users encouraged to transition over.

While Picasa no longer operates, it remains one of the most beloved and influential apps in digital photography's history. With its user-friendly interface and robust editing and management features, Picasa helped make digital photography accessible to an ever-widening range of individuals.
